Anunoby strokes it from outside in IU's exhibition opener

BLOOMINGTON -- At the risk of engaging in preseason hyperbole, OG Anunoby looks more comfortable at the 3-point line.

Indiana's sophomore forward buried four 3-pointers en route to a 16-point performance Tuesday night to open exhibition play. After the 98-65 win over Hope College, Hoosiers coach Tom Crean was asked about Anunoby coming out well in advance of tipoff to fire up some 3s.

"OG spends as much extra time in the gym at his age as anybody we've had here," Crean said. "If that continues to keep up, he will be in a really good place. When you've got that kind of work ethic, and OG has it, I think he's going to continue to get better shooting the ball. Shooting is certainly a big part of it."

Anunoby shot 45 percent from long range as a freshman, but it was a small sample size of 13 makes in only 29 attempts.

Heading into this season, if Anunoby is less reluctant to shoot from distance, Indiana will be even more difficult to contain outside.

"I think it's been a real big focus, adding another element to his game," teammate Juwan Morgan said of Anunoby. "Tonight he was on fire as soon as we got out there."

Anunoby's four 3-point makes came amid seven attempts.

"He was just knociing down shots, and when he's knocking down shots, it opens things up for Thomas (Bryant)," Morgan said. "And once Thomas is scoring, people have to impose back on him, which opens up the game for us again."
