TinCaps tame Cubs in first game of doubleheader

CHRIS GOFF | The Journal Gazette

After the start of Saturday's doubleheader was delayed two hours by rain, the TinCaps made the long wait worth their fans' while.

Fort Wayne's 7-3 win over South Bend in the first contest at Parkview Field snapped a five-game losing streak. The second game of the doubleheader, also shortened to seven innings by rule, is scheduled to begin at 6:05 p.m.

The TinCaps (8-14) have split the first two games of this four-game series against the Cubs (13-9).

The visitors went ahead 3-1 Saturday before Fort Wayne erupted for six runs in the fourth inning.

The offensive stars included G.K. Young (2 for 3 with a two-run triple) and Alan Garcia (1 for 3 with a two-run double). Brad Zunica's RBI double in the bottom of the second tied the game. Reinaldo Ilarraza hit an RBI single in the fourth to give Fort Wayne the lead for good.

Nick Monroe earned the win with 2 1/3 scoreless innings in relief of Austin Smith, who went 3 2/3 and committed a run-scoring throwing error as well as allowing Jhonny Pereda an RBI single. South Bend's other run came on a run-scoring error by catcher Marcus Greene Jr.

David Bednar closed it out with a 1-2-3 seventh.

Will Headean will start the second game with Dylan Cease pitching for South Bend.
