TinCaps rout Snappers behind Smith's gem

CHRIS GOFF | The Journal Gazette

When Austin Smith is at his best, lofty potential for the 20-year-old right-hander is evident.

Smith pitched six shutout innings Thursday night, and the TinCaps' offense erupted early in what became a 10-2 rout of Beloit in the opener of a three-game series at Parkview Field.

Fort Wayne (13-21) has won back-to-back games for the first time since mid-April, ending a stretch of 19 games without consecutive wins.

Also, the TinCaps snapped a streak of five straight losses in series openers.

Smith (2-2) made it all possible, giving up just two hits and one walk with five strikeouts. His ERA dropped from 7.85 to 5.92. The Snappers scored twice in the eighth inning to deny Fort Wayne its second shutout win.

Beloit (15-17) did not get an effective start from Ty Damron (1-4). He was charged with four earned runs on five hits in 1 2/3 innings.

Rod Boykin and Fernando Tatis Jr. homered for the TinCaps, and Jorge Oña drove in five runs.
