TinCaps routed in road opener
The TinCaps' eight-game road trip began in disappointing fashion Monday night.
Starting pitcher Reggie Lawson recorded only four outs in his debut for Fort Wayne, and West Michigan rode a 17-hit attack to a 12-2 rout in the opener of a four-game series at Fifth Third Ballpark in Comstock Park, Michigan.
The Whitecaps led 4-0 when Lawson was pulled and promptly scored seven more runs against Nick Monroe to make it 11-0 after the third inning. Josh Lester and Anthony Pereira each hit a three-run home run off Monroe, while Cam Gibson got Monroe with a solo shot.
Fort Wayne (17-27) broke the shutout on Nate Easley's eighth-inning RBI double and got an RBI single from Marcus Greene Jr. in the ninth.
West Michigan (29-14) cruised behind Spenser Watkins, who allowed only four hits in seven shutout innings.
Lawson, ranked the No. 29 prospect in the San Diego Padres' farm system, was added to Fort Wayne's roster earlier in the day along with Mason Thompson, the No. 21 prospect. Thompson is scheduled to pitch Wednesday.
Notes: TinCaps pitchers Hansel Rodriguez and Mark Zimmeran were taken off the roster. ... Fort Wayne shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. was named Midwest League Player of the Week.
