TinCaps stifled by Hot Rods
CHRIS GOFF | The Journal Gazette
The TinCaps entered Wednesday with a 10-6 record in day games. This time, sunny skies were no harbinger of success.
Fort Wayne was held to three runs or fewer for the 22nd game this season, falling 5-1 to Bowling Green before an announced crowd of 6,114 Wednesday afternoon at Parkview Field.
The Hot Rods (24-27) will try Thursday night for a sweep of the three-game series.
They made it look easy in the middle game, scoring a run in each of the first four innings to lead 4-0.
Jonah Heim hit an RBI grounder in the first, Rene Pinto knocked an RBI single in the second, Robbie Tenerowicz launched a home run in the third, and Pinto struck again with a sacrifice fly in the fourth.
Bowling Green starter Ethan Clark pitched six shutout innings with six strikeouts. Counterpart Mason Thompson, pitching for the first time at Parkview Field, went four innings and gave up four runs on six hits with five strikeouts.
Wilmer Torres threw two shutout innings before giving way to Diomar Lopez, who allowed Josh Lowe's RBI single in the seventh. Fort Wayne's backup catcher, Webster Rivas, pitched a scoreless ninth. It was the third time this year Rivas has taken the mound.
The TinCaps (18-35) had only three hits and have lost nine of their last 10.
G.K. Young's ninth-inning RBI groundout avoided the shutout.
