Ilarraza, Young rally TinCaps past Cubs
CHRIS GOFF | The Journal Gazette
In a wild, back-and-forth affair that featured numerous emotional shifts and big hits, the TinCaps enjoyed the last laugh Tuesday night.
Reinaldo Ilarraza's two-out, ninth-inning RBI double tied the score, and G.K. Young followed with an RBI single to give Fort Wayne an 11-10 win over South Bend before an announced attendance of 5,607 at Parkview Field.
The TinCaps (31-45, 5-1 second half) appeared to have a victory in hand when Buddy Reed came through with an RBI groundout in the eighth inning for a 9-8 lead.
The Cubs (40-35, 1-5) then took the lead in the top of the ninth. Roberto Caro delivered a sacrifice fly to tie it at 9, and Vimael Machin lined an RBI double to left-center field for a 10-9 edge.
With a runner on second base and two out, Ilarraza jumped on the first pitch he saw from Wyatt Short and drilled it down the left-field line to keep the TinCaps alive.
Young then just got enough of the ball to dump it into shallow center for Fort Wayne's 13th hit of the night, setting off a celebration with teammates on the infield.
The TinCaps carried a 4-2 lead into the seventh. After South Bend scored six runs in the top half, Fort Wayne came back with four in the bottom half.
