Young, TinCaps rally to beat Lugnuts
CHRIS GOFF | The Journal Gazette
The TinCaps didn't get their first hit today until there were two outs in the sixth inning. They then rattled off six hits in the eighth alone.
G.K. Young's game-winning RBI single capped Fort Wayne's five-run eighth, and Diomar Lopez earned the save in a stunning 5-4 triumph over Lansing before an announced crowd of 6,321 at Parkview Field.
The TinCaps (37-51, 11-7 second half) earned new life when Nick Hartman threw a run-scoring wild pitch to make it 4-4, and Young sent Hartman's very next pitch into center field to bring in pinch-runner Nate Easley.
Mason Thompson started for Fort Wayne and, as planned, pitched only three innings. He gave up one run, on Mattingly Romanin's first-inning sacrifice fly, and one hit as he continues rebuilding his arm strength after not pitching for nearly a month.
Ronald Bolanos followed Thompson for five innings and gave up three runs. Joshua Palacios hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth, and the Lugnuts made it 4-0 on Mitch Nay's two-run home run in the eighth.
Among Fort Wayne's offensive successes were Rod Boykin, who went 2 for 3 with an RBI double and a walk, and Reinaldo Ilarraza, who finished 2 for 4 with an RBI single and a walk. Fernando Tatis Jr. wound up 1 of 3 with an RBI double and two walks.
Lansing (43-41, 6-12) will attempt to come away with a split of this four-game series in the finale Monday afternoon.
