TinCaps blow late lead, lose to Whitecaps
Hansel Rodriguez, who has six saves since being shuffled into the TinCaps' closer role, encountered his roughest outing Friday night against West Michigan.
A game-winning two-run single by Cameron Warner gave the Whitecaps a 7-6 victory before an announced crowd of 6,837 at Fifth Third Ballpark in Comstock Park, Michigan, and Fort Wayne lost two out of the three games in the series.
Rodriguez entered with two outs in the eighth inning to protect a 6-4 lead. Dylan Burdeaux hit an RBI double to cut it to one, and Warner handed the 20-year-old right-hander his second blown save.
The TinCaps (47-57, 21-13 second half) went down in order in the ninth. They had gone up 5-4 on Reinaldo Ilarraza's RBI single in the fifth after trailing 4-1, a deficit Fernando Tatis Jr. helped erase with a two-run double.
Mason Thompson, originally scheduled to be Fort Wayne's starting pitcher, was placed on the seven-day disabled list. Jim McDade, making the fill-in start, went six innings and gave up four runs on 10 hits with six strikeouts. Will Headean followed and worked 1 2/3 innings.
Note: Pitcher Lake Bachar was promoted to Fort Wayne from the Arizona Rookie League.
