Greene's heroics lift TinCaps over Dragons
CHRIS GOFF | The Journal Gazette
Marcus Greene Jr. lined a ninth-inning RBI single over Dayton's drawn-in infield to give the TinCaps a 3-2 win on Sunday afternoon.
Fort Wayne (49-57, 23-13 second half) started the ninth with a single by Fernando Tatis Jr. and a sacrifice bunt by Reinaldo Ilarraza that prompted the Dragons to intentionally walk All-Star slugger Jorge Oña.
Tatis and Oña pulled off a double steal to put two runners in scoring position with one out and the score tied at 2. Aaron Fossas (3-1) got two strikes on Greene, who hit a slider to left field to give the TinCaps a win and send an announced crowd of 5,304 home happy.
Fort Wayne appeared to have victory in hand in the eighth, but reliever Wilmer Torres allowed an RBI single by Bruce Yari that erased the 2-1 lead.
Dayton starter Wennington Romero pitched 4 1/3 innings and allowed two runs on five hits. Greene, who finished 2 for 3 with a walk and a sacrifice fly, and Tatis, who went 1 for 3 with two walks, one with the bases loaded, drove in the early runs for a 2-0 Fort Wayne lead.
The Dragons scored their first run in the third on Taylor Trammell's RBI groundout. A runner had advanced to third base on a Tatis error, his 23rd of the season.
Dayton's Jose Siri singled in the third to extend his hitting streak to 35 games, tying the Midwest League record set by Tony Toups in 1977.
Ronald Bolanos pitched seven innings for Fort Wayne and gave up just one run on six hits with seven strikeouts. Hansel Rodriguez (4-9) worked a scoreless top of the ninth.
