TinCaps beat Loons

Behind terrific pitching from Tom Cosgrove, the TinCaps beat the Great Lakes Loons 4-1 on Thursday at Dow Diamond in Midland, Michigan. With the win, Fort Wayne earned a split in the four-game series.

Cosgrove became just the second TinCaps starting pitcher this season to go six innings. Just as fellow left-hander Aaron Leasher did last week against Great Lakes (5-13), Cosgrove blanked the Loons. The 21-year-old from Staten Island, N.Y., struck out six as he scattered five hits and two walks. Great Lakes starter Wills Montgomerie kept Fort Wayne (8-13) scoreless for five innings.

The TinCaps finally broke through in the seventh. After Juan Fernandez pulled a double to left field off reliever Riley Ottesen, Jack Suwinski flew out deep to right allowing Fernandez to tag to third. Reinaldo Ilarraza grounded out to first base, scoring Fernandez.

The TinCaps added insurance with three runs in the eighth that was sparked by Jeisson Rosario leading off with a triple to left-center. Fort Wayne then on a fielder’s choice grounder, a single that barely got into center, an error, and a wild pitch after a sacrifice bunt.

Rosario and Tirso Ornelas both had two hits while Jalen Washington reached base three times with a double and two walks.

Following Cosgrove, Jared Carkuff tossed three innings of relief to earn the save. The only run for the Loons came with two outs in the home ninth on a solo homer by Jared Walker.
