TinCaps 6, Dayton 5

TinCaps edge Dayton

The TinCaps took a five-run lead after five innings and hung on late to pick up their second straight victory, 6-5 over the host Dayton Dragons.

Fort Wayne (9-13) scored three runs in the fifth inning when both leadoff hitter Esteury Ruiz and Carlos Belen homered, extending the visitors' lead to 6-1. It was the third home run of the season for both Ruiz and Belen, who combined to reach base five times.

TinCaps starter Osvaldo Hernandez held the Dragons (9-10) in check through 5 2/3 innings, striking out five and walking just one. He gave up two runs, the second coming on a Narciso Crook double to deep center that drove in Jose Garcia. The hit knocked Hernandez out of the game, but he wound up getting the win to improve to 2-2.

Jordan Guerrero was solid in relief of Hernandez, pitching 1 1/3 hitless innings, striking out three. The right-hander lowered his ERA to 1.08 and has not given up a run in his last five outings.

The score remained 6-2 into the eighth inning when left-hander Ben Sheckler entered in place of Guerrero. Three straight extra-base hits off Sheckler, including Ben Sansone's second home run of the year with a runner on second, brought in three runs and trimmed the TinCaps' lead to one. Crook followed Sansone's homer with a single, his third hit, ending Sheckler's night after he'd gotten just one out.

Travis Radke got the final out of the eighth and held the lead in the ninth, despite a single and an error putting two runners on base, to earn his second save.
