TinCaps add Ramirez to start tonight

DYLAN SINN | The Journal Gazette

Right-hander Emmanuel Ramirez will be back with the TinCaps for the third straight season, starting tonight, when he will be on the mound against the Dayton Dragons at Fifth Third Field. Ramirez spent parts of the 2016 and 2017 seasons with Fort Wayne and will join the TinCaps after making three starts in High-A Lake Elsinore so far this season.

The 23-year-old has posted impressive strikeout totals at every stop in his career, including 24 strikeouts in 17 1/3 innings with Fort Wayne last season. This is Ramirez's sixth season in professional baseball and he has risen as high as Lake Elsinore, for whom he posted a 3.82 ERA in 33 innings last season, but a 6.19 mark in 16 innings this year.

Ramirez has plenty of stuff and has commanded it better in recent years, throwing a fastball that touches 93 occasionally and one of the best curveballs in the system, a pitch that darts downward and is close to a true 12-6 offering.

To make room for tonight's starter, right-hander Nick Kuzia was sent to extended spring training, where he has spent most of this season. The 22-year-old made one appearance with Fort Wayne, throwing three innings and surrendering a pair of home runs against the Great Lakes Loons on Wednesday.
