Padres place Gore on DL, send Stillman back to Fort Wayne
DYLAN SINN | The Journal Gazette
The San Diego Padres placed TinCaps left-hander MacKenzie Gore on the 7-day disabled list today, retroactive to Saturday. In a corresponding move, they promoted right-handed reliever Will Stillman back to Fort Wayne to fill out the TinCaps' 25-man roster.
Gore was scratched from his scheduled Sunday start because of the blister issue that has plagued him much of this season. Manager Anthony Contreras said after Sunday's game that the team is trying to figure out why the blister keeps recurring and the missed start was mostly out of an abundance of caution.
If Gore progresses well this week, he'd be eligible to come off the disabled list in time for his next scheduled start on Saturday against first-place Lansing. It's possible the team doesn't plan for Gore to miss another start and they only put him on the DL so the TinCaps could have another reliever available during this brutal stretch of 21 games in 21 days they're in the middle of.
Promoting Stillman fits that theory. The 24-year-old right-hander made just one appearance earlier this season in Fort Wayne before he got sent to extended spring training. In that appearance, he pitched two innings and gave up eight runs on six hits and four walks. That's a 36.00 ERA.
He was better with the TinCaps last season, striking out more than 11 hitters per nine innings in five appearances (three starts), though his ERA was still an inflated 8.27. He was a sixth-round pick out of Wofford in the 2016 draft.
The TinCaps play a double-header in Comstock Park, Michigan against the West Michigan Whitecaps today. The first game begins at 11:05 a.m. and the second will follow half an hour after the end of the first. Fort Wayne enters the twin bill riding a five-game winning streak.
