West Michigan 2, TinCaps 1
TinCaps lose 3rd straight
The TinCaps dropped their third straight game 2-1 against the West Michigan Whitecaps, leaving 10 runners on base at Fifth Third Ballpark in Comstock Park, Michigan.
Fort Wayne (20-25) outhit the Whitecaps 9-8, but went 2 for 14 with runners in scoring position. The Whitecaps went 1 for 10, but that one hit brought in the game's winning run when Garrett McCain singled to left off Aaron Leasher in the sixth, breaking a 1-all tie.
Leasher had a solid start for the TinCaps, pitching six innings and giving up one earned run on six hits while striking out three and walking three. He took the loss and fell to 2-3.
Fort Wayne scored its only run in the third when center fielder Robbie Podorsky doubled to left and Jalen Washington scored easily from second. Esteury Ruiz tried to score another run on the same play, but got thrown out at home plate. The double was Podorsky's first extra-base hit with the TinCaps this season.
Outside of that RBI hit, Whitecaps (26-19) starter Elvin Rodriguez shut down the struggling TinCaps offense, pitching six innings and giving up just four hits while striking out nine. Fort Wayne has scored two runs in three games in the four-game series, while striking out 31 times in 23 innings.
Four TinCaps had two-hit days: Washington, Podorsky, Luis Almanzar and Justin Lopez. Tirso Ornelas had been the team's hottest hitter in the last week, but went 0 for 4 with three strikeouts.
West Michigan right-hander Clate Schmidt pitched three shutout innings to end the game, striking out three and picking up his third save of the season.
