Cedar Rapids 6, TinCaps 2

TinCaps fall in hole, never recover in loss to Kernels


The TinCaps couldn't dig out of an early hold in dropping a 6-2 decision to the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Thursday at Perfect Game Field in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. 

Fort Wayne (44-46, 12-9 second half) fell behind 6-0 to Cedar Rapids (46-44, 14-7) in the eighth inning. The TinCaps scored two runs in the top of the ninth on singles by Luis Almanzar and Jalen Washington. Scoring the runs were Jeisson Rosario and Almanzar.

But Jack Suwinski grounded into a double play and Robbie Podorsky popped out to end the rally and the game.

Rosario and Washington each had two hits for the TinCaps. 

Mason Thompson (6-6) took the loss after pitching four innings and giving up seven hits, four runs (three earned), while striking out four. 

The Kernels' Bailey Ober improved to 6-1 by not allowing a run in 6 2/3 innings, while giving up only five hits. He struck out 10 batters. 

For Cedar Rapids, Trey Cabbage was 4 for 4 with two RBI, including a solo home run in the second inning. 

The Kernels scored a run in the first, three in the third and two in the eighth.

Both teams left eight runners on base, while the TinCaps were 3 for 10 with runners in scoring position and the Kernels were 4 for 15.
