Pregame: TinCaps need a win
Elizabeth Wyman | The Journal Gazette
The TinCaps are in dire need of a win. Going 2-12 in their last 14 games and dropping eight in a row at home, they're dangerously close to falling further back in the Midwest Eastern League standings.
Rounding out the three-game series against the LumberKings, the TinCaps will look to earn their first win of the series by sending left-hander Ben Sheckler to the mound. Sheckler (1-2, 3.40) picked up his only win June 17 against Great Lakes. In 2 1/3 innings, the 23-year-old gave up two hits and no runs. In Sheckler's last 6 2/3 innings pitched, he's given up eight hits and three earned runs.
The TinCaps have only scored 11 runs in the last four games. The LumberKings will try to keep those numbers low sending right-hander Randy Bell to the mound. Bell (2-2, 7.48) will see his sixth start against the TinCaps. In 2 12/3 innings pitched, the 23-year-old has given up 30 hits and 18 earned runs.
Defense has been a problem for the TinCaps of late. They had five errors in the double-header against Clinton on Sunday didn't help the defense get off the field.
Part of the defensive lapses could be due to the fact the TinCaps are the youngest team in the Midwest League. With 11 teenagers on the roster, and the average age of a TinCap batter being 19.3, the TinCaps will need to play up tonight as the LumberKings are the oldest team in the league with an average age of 22.3.
Getting a win at home might send Fort Wayne out on a positive note as it plays seven consecutive games on the road.
