How it Happened
The TinCaps (46-53, 14-16 second half) closed their six-game homestand with a much-needed 4-2 win over the Clinton LumberKings on Monday.
It was a busy first inning for both the TinCaps and the LumberKings. Joseph Rosa singled to open the inning. After stealing second, an Ariel Sandoval single sent Rosa to third. An RBI single by Jack Larsen brought home Rosa to give the LumberKings the 1-0 lead. TinCaps starting pitcher Ben Sheckler threw 28 pitches in the first inning.
In the bottom of the first, Jeisson Rosario was hit by pitch followed by walks to Gabrial Arias and Juan Fernandez – which included nine straight balls by LumberKings starting pitcher Randy Bell – leaving a two-out, bases loaded situation for Kelvin Melean. The shortstop delivered a single to left bringing home Rosario and Fernandez. Luis Almanzar followed with a line drive single, bringing home Fernandez extending the TinCaps lead 3-1.
A Eugene Helder single in the top of third scored Ariel Sandoval to bring the LumberKings within 3-2.
TinCaps reliever Caleb Boushley finagled his way out of a two-out bases loaded jam in the fifth inning when he struck out Onil Peña with a 92 mph fastball, holding on to the lead.
For added comfort, Esteury Ruiz singled to left, scoring Jack Suwinski to extend the TinCaps' lead 4-2
The TinCaps will have a day off Tuesday before hitting the road Wednesday at Dayton to take on the Dragons in a three-game series. Dayton (46-53, 15-16), will send right-hander Patrick McGuff (1-0, 0.0) to the mound for just his third start, while Fort Wayne will counter with right-hander Luis Patiño (3-3, 2.28).
