TinCaps reliever on Injured List; Adrian Martinez back to Fort Wayne
DYLAN SINN | The Journal Gazette
Prior to the TinCaps' matchup tonight against the Dayton Dragons, the Padres made a move on the roster of its Midwest League affiliate. The team placed left-handed reliever Hazajel Quijada on the 7-day Injured List with elbow discomfort and promoted right-hander Adrian Martinez from extended spring training to the TinCaps.
The 21-year-old Quijada was a 17th-round pick in the 2018 draft and has pitched in three games for the TinCaps so far this season, without recording a decision. He went 2 2/3 innings and gave up one run while striking out five of the 11 batters he faced. He has electric stuff and he could be an important part of the TinCaps' bullpen when he returns. Quijada joins infielder Justin Lopez as Fort Wayne players currently on the IL.
Martinez, a 6-foot-2 22-year-old, was with the TinCaps to start last season and pitched eight games for the team, going 0-1 with a 9.87 ERA before being demoted to extended spring training. He struck out 26 in 17 1/3 innings, but also walked 12 and gave up 28 hits. He spent the rest of the season as a starter with the Tri City Dust Devils, going 4-5 with a 6.00 ERA. His underlying numbers were much better than that, however, as he struck out 52 and walked only 14 in 57 innings. He was unlucky more than anything as batters hit a blistering .413 on balls in play (.300 is about the average). He'll likely work as a long reliever in the TinCaps' bullpen.
Fort Wayne returns to Parkview Field on Thursday for a matchup against the West Michigan Whitecaps.
