Up next for Komets: Walleye

JUSTIN A. COHN | The Journal Gazette

The Komets will face the Toledo Walleye in the Central Division finals with the series beginning Friday at the Huntington Center in Toledo, Ohio, with a 2-2-1-1-1 format.

Toledo defeated the Kalamazoo Wings 3-1 in a Game 7 tonight, even though Toledo’s starting goalie, Jake Paterson, suffered an injury and had to be replaced by Jeff Lerg early in the second period.

It was tied at 1 heading into the third period, but Toledo’s Evan Rankin and Zach Nastasiuk broke the game open with goals 37 seconds apart.

During the regular season, Toledo was an ECHL-best 51-17-4. Fort Wayne, which was second in the division and fourth overall, was 45-19-8.

Head-to-head, the Komets were 1-3-2 against Toledo.

In the first round of the playoffs, the Komets took out the Quad City Mallards in five games and have been off since Saturday.

Fort Wayne and Toledo last met in the postseason in 2015, when the Walleye won in seven games.
