Ex-Komet now head coach; my conference picks

JUSTIN A. COHN | The Journal Gazette

Raise your hand if you remember this guy wearing a Komets uniform. Jamey Hicks, who played a game with the team in 1994-95 (he was scoreless but took a penalty), was named coach of the Southern Professional Hockey League's new Birmingham Bulls. He played in Birmingham from 1996 to 2001 and was the team's leader in goals, assists and points in the ECHL.

Speaking of the ECHL, the conference finals begin Friday with Colorado facing Toledo and South Carolina taking on Manchester.

Who ya got?

I'm taking Manchester in the Eastern Conference, largely because of the wacko 3-4 format to the series that starts in South Carolina. The teams match up pretty evenly, but Manchester is better on special teams. I think it will go six games.

In the Western Conference, I'm picking Toledo in six. Colorado's best hope, I think, is to contain the Walleye's power play, which was oh so good against the Komets in the Central Division finals. The 2-3-2 series begins in Toledo. By the way, Colorado's goalie, Lukas Hafner, is from Toledo.
