Blake Thompson, a defenseman who helped St. Norbert to a NCAA Div. III national championship in 2014, has signed on to play for the Komets in the coming season. The Komets also signed forward Tyson Fawcett, a familiar foe, for the season that begins Oct. 14 at Memorial Coliseum against the Toledo Walleye.
Thompson, 24, played at St. Norbert from 2013 to 2017, totaling 19 goals, 73 points and 170 penalty minutes in 112 games. He played his first two professional games last season with the ECHL’s Orlando Solar Bears.
Fawcett, 24, played 72 games for Fort Wayne rival Evansville in 2015-16, accruing 22 goals, 42 points and 54 penalty minutes in 72 games. Last season, he split time between the Tulsa Oilers and Elmira Jackals, totaling five goals, 19 points, 42 penalty minutes and a minus-34 rating in 49 games, also skating two games with Rochester of the higher-level American Hockey League.
The Komets have 20 players on their roster, including forwards Shawn Szydlowski, Jamie Schaafsma, Justin Hodgman, Garrett Thompson, Dennis Kravchenko, Gabriel Desjardins, Mason Baptista, Ralph Cuddemi, Stephen Pierog and Taylor Crunk, defensemen Bobby Shea, Jason Binkley, Curtis Leonard, Cody Sol, Brad Bourke and Ryan Lowney, and goaltenders Garrett Bartus and Alex Sakellaropoulos.
Baptista and Blake Thompson were teammates at St. Norbert.
