Komets shoot often, score once in loss
JUSTIN A. COHN | The Journal Gazette
The Komets want more shooters this season. And based on their first preseason game, tonight in Indianapolis, they might have them.
Whether or not they have finishers remains to be seen.
The Komets totaled 39 shots on goal but lost 3-1 to the Indy Fuel at Indiana Farmers Coliseum, in front of an announced crowd of 2,406.
Captain Jamie Schaafsma had the only Fort Wayne goal, tying it at 1 at 8:51 of the first period, and it was set up by newcomer Marc-Olivier Roy.
Tommy Olczyk gave the Fuel the lead 2:29 into the second period and Will Smith’s empty-net goal finished the scoring in the final minute.
Rookie goaltender Alex Sakellaropoulos started in net for the Komets and stopped 7 of 9 shots before being replaced 15:51 into the second period. Garrett Bartus stopped all 13 shots he faced in relief.
Collin Delia played the entire game for the Fuel, which will take on the Komets again Saturday night at Memorial Coliseum.
Fort Wayne will finish its exhibition slate Monday at the Coliseum against the Kalamazoo Wings.
Schaafsma had a team-high eight shots and Roy had six. Newcomers Blake Thompson and Stephen Pierog were both a team-worst minus-3.
Notes: Curtis Leonard, who had been re-signed by the Komets in the offseason, made the opening night roster of the American Hockey League’s Chicago Wolves. … Trevor Cheek made the roster of the AHL’s Tucson Roadrunners, who are one step above Fort Wayne in the Arizona Coyotes’ minor-league system.
