Comeback K's beat Mallards
JUSTIN A. COHN | The Journal Gazette
Once, twice, three times the Komets came back.
And they won, for the 11th time in their last 13 games, when captain Jamie Schaafsma took a pass from Artur Tyanulin and finished off a 2-on-1 rush during overtime to complete a 5-4 victory Wednesday over the Quad City Mallards in front of 1,952 fans at the TaxSlayer Center in Moline Illinois.
Garrett Bartus stopped 27 shots for the Komets (16-7-2), who play host Saturday to the Mallards (8-15-2), who have lost five straight games.
Tyanulin had one goal, two points and a plus-3 rating after returning earlier in the day from Tucson of the higher-level American Hockey League.
The Mallards' Kyle Bigos scored the only goal of the first period with a 50-foot shot. Fort Wayne's Mason Baptista tied it 4:18 into the second period by skating out of the right corner and slipping the puck past goalie Matt O'Connor (42 saves), but Quad City's Triston Grant and Ryan McGrath answered with goals.
The Komets rallied with Garrett Thompson redirecting a Ryan Culkin shot at 15:18 of the second period, and Louick Marcotte scoring from 40 feet at 17:57 after Logan Nelson circled the net to set him up.
A failed attempt to clear the puck out from the front of the Fort Wayne net allowed Josh MacDonald to give the Mallards their third lead of the game, during a power play 9:10 into the third period, but a 100-foot Ryan Lowney pass allowed Tyanulin to get behind the defense to tie it 44 seconds later.
The Komets played without injured forward Shawn Szydlowski, who had a point in 11 of 12 games, totaling 10 goals and 21 points. Thompson has a point in eight of the last nine games, totaling seven goals and 15 points in that span.
The Komets are 3-0-0 against the Mallards this season.
