Bartus shuts out Mallards
JUSTIN A. COHN | The Journal Gazette
Garrett Bartus made 34 saves for a shutout in the Komets’ 5-0 victory over the Quad City Mallards tonight in Moline, Illinois.
It was Fort Wayne’s 14th victory in its last 17 games and improved it to 5-0-0 this season against the Mallards.
Louick Marcotte had two goals for the Komets (19-8-2) and Shawn Szydlowski had a goal and three points. Quad City (8-18-3) has lost 10 straight games.
Eric Hartzell stopped 47 shots for the Mallards.
What had begun as a goaltending battle was solved by a shooter 15:02 into the second period, when Fort Wayne’s Mason Baptista skated out of the right circle and sent a shot at his former teammate, Hartzell, who kicked the puck away. But Baptista got the rebound and whacked it in to make it 1-0.
Marcotte made it 2-0 with a short-handed goal 2:08 later, redirecting Daniel Maggio’s pass from the left wing into the bottom of the net.
The Komets took a 3-0 lead on their 40th shot, 7:30 into the third period, after Szydlowski skated into the offensive zone and sent a centering pass to Garrett Thompson, who redirected the puck toward Hartzell, got his own rebound and flicked it high.
Szydlowski got his own rebound and scored from between the circles at 9:17 and Marcotte scored, after a cross-ice Desjardins pass, to make it 5-0 at 10:35.
The Komets will finish their string of three games in as many nights Sunday at Memorial Coliseum – the start will be later than usual for a Sunday game, at 7:30 p.m. – and Fort Wayne’s Addison Agen, runner-up on “The Voice,” will sing the national anthem before the New Year’s Eve game against the rival Toledo Walleye.
