Kansas City 4, Komets 3

Komets drop 2nd straight to Mavericks

The Komets left Independence, Missouri with back-to-back losses courtesy of woeful third periods.

As they did the night before, the Kansas City Mavericks poured it on late to get a victory — this time 4-3 — thanks to third-period goals from Eric Freschi and Jared VanWormer, his second of the night.

The last goal came on a power play as the Mavericks completed a 2 for 7 night with the man-advantage. Fort Wayne, which arrived in Independence having won 17 of 19 games, was 2 for 6.

Michael Houser stopped 28 shots in the loss.

The Komets play the Quad City Mallards today in Moline, Illinois.

The first period Saturday saw goals by the Komets’ Ryan Culkin and Kansas City’s Corey Durocher, who netted the winning goal in Friday’s 3-2 victory.

The Komets took a 3-1 lead on goals from Zac Larraza and Garrett Thompson, the latter being their second power-play goal of the night.

The Mavericks trimmed the deficit to one on VanWormer’s goal 12:10 into the second period on a power play.
