VIDEO: 14-game suspension for punching Komet

JUSTIN A. COHN | The Journal Gazette

Quad City Mallards captain Triston Grant was suspended 14 games and fined an undisclosed amount of money today by the ECHL for punching Justin MacDonald during the Komets’ 4-3 victory Sunday in Moline, Illinois.

See video above.

The two were jawing in the faceoff circle before Grant pulled MacDonald toward him with his left hand, dropped his right glove and punched him in the face. MacDonald, who was in a defenseless position, is now out with a concussion. Grant, who was assessed a match penalty during the game, had just returned from a five-game suspension for kneeing and boarding.

Speaking of injuries: Ryan Culkin (broken hand) is out until the playoffs begin; the Komets hope Cody Sol (elbow) can return with three games left in the regular season or so; Jamie Schaafsma (lower body) is now a couple weeks off.

The Komets are looking at possibly bringing a rookie goalie in if Michael Houser doesn't return from Tucson before Friday. In the meantime, Andy DiCristofaro and Alex Zion have been helping out in practice. Garrett Bartus is the No. 1 right now.
