Rumor mill: Big signing coming for K's
JUSTIN A. COHN | The Journal Gazette
I'm hearing the Komets have a big signing on the way. By big, I mean a forward with a wealth of experience in the higher-level American Hockey League. I don't know more than that. But they sure do need something like that; they are light up front, regardless of what they get from the new affiliation with the Vegas Golden Knights.
Speaking of that, Fort Wayne coach Gary Graham, who could shed no light on the impending signing, is particularly excited about the affiliation because he'll get to work closely with Wendell Young, who is general manager of the Golden Knights' AHL affiliate, the Chicago Wolves.
In recent years, the Komets have shared players like Mike Embach, Drew Daniels and Curtis Leonard with the Wolves, so Graham has gotten to know Young.
"The day-to-day roster changes in our league, he respects that and understands that," Graham said. "When you deal with a guy like that and he knows how that works and that we also have an obligation here, (it helps). He’s always been a guy who’s more than willing to understand something like, if there's an extra day that we can have a guy, like for a Saturday game here before he's called up, that could help us and help both teams. That's great to work with someone like that."
The Komets were a top-five team in the ECHL last season in number of AHL call-ups. In 2016-17, they led the league -- as an independent team.
