Komets fall to Fuel in OT

JUSTIN A. COHN | The Journal Gazette

Matt Rupert’s goal in the 3-on-3 overtime cemented a 3-2 victory for the Indy Fuel over the Komets in front of 8,119 fans at the Coliseum tonight.

J.C. Campagna had a goal and an assist for the Komets on a night  the Hanson Brothers from the 1977 hockey movie “Slap Shot” were in town

The Hansons signed autographs and the replica Charlestown Chiefs jerseys donned by the Komets were auctioned off to benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Fort Wayne and the Blue Bucket Brigade.

The Komets (21-16-2) have lost three in a row. Indy (20-17-2) snapped a three-game winless streak.

The Komets played without their top two scorers, all-star Justin Hodgman and Jake Kamrass. Hodgman missed a fourth straight game with a hand injury. Kamrass had an upper-body injury. The Komets were also without Jordan Sims (hip), Trey Phillips (family leave) and Taylor Crunk, who completed his four-game suspension for punching Indy’s Radovan Bondra.

Coming off a brutal 10-8 loss to the Kalamazoo Wings on Wednesday at the Coliseum, a scoreless first period seemed like improvement the Komets, even if Indy goaltender Matt Tomkins thwarted the best scoring chance of the frame by stopping Mason Baptista’s one-timer from point-blank range.

The lone goal of the second period came from Campagna, courtesy of a no-look backhand Marco Roy pass from the right circle, setting up the 1-0 lead at 5:45.

The Fuel polished off a 2-on-1 rush to tie it at 1 at 7:59 of the third period, when Rupert put a shot through the legs of goalie Lukas Hafner and Ryan Rupert poked the puck into an open net.

Another Matt Rupert shot led to a Fuel goal at 14:51; his shot caromed off of Fort Wayne defenseman Oskari Halme and on to the stick of Logan Nelson, who had an empty net to shoot at for a 2-1 lead.

Brady Shaw tied it by putting in the rebound of a Campgana shot at 19:46 of the third period.

Notes: The referee was Chris Pontes. … Hodgman, the captain of the Western Conference All-Star team, is day to day and therefore questionable to play in the Komets’ game Sunday at Toledo, Ohio, and Monday at the All-Star Classic there that will be broadcast on NHL Network and be a 3-on-3 tournament between the Western and Eastern Conferences and two Toledo Walleye teams. … The ECHL’s senior vice-president of hockey operations, Joe Ernst, was in attendance.
