Another winning goal for Komets' Baptista

Justin A. Cohn | The Journal Gazette

Mason Baptista did it again.

His third-period goal in Elmira, New York, was the difference in the Komets’ 3-2 victory over the Elmira Jackals.

In front of 2,426 fans at First Arena, Baptista gave the Komets a 3-1 lead at 18:06. Though the Jackals’ Sebastien Sylvestre scored 41 seconds later, goaltender Garrett Bartus would not be foiled again as the Komets swept their two games in Elmira.

Baptista had the lone goal in the third period of Wednesday’s 1-0 victory. He now has three game-winning goals.

Bartus, who stopped all 28 shots he faced Wednesday, stopped 24 of 26 tonight. That included a third-period penalty shot by Matt Lane.

Baptista, who has 10 goals and 18 points in 33 games this season, has netted a goal in five straight games and totaled seven points along the way. His goal-scoring streak is the third longest in the ECHL this season.

The Komets (24-13-4) also got goals from Gabriel Desjardins, who made it 1-0 at 14:29 of the first period, and Garrett Thompson for a 2-1 lead 47 seconds into the third period.

League-worst Elmira (9-26-5) got a goal from Casey Thrush and 26 saves from Jason Kasdorf.

The Komets, who won’t play Elmira again during the regular season, improved to 2-2-0 on their five-game road trip that ends Saturday at Reading, Pennsylvania.

Defenseman Cody Sol, who had missed the previous 15 games with a knee injury, was back in the Komets’ lineup. Though scoreless tonight, he now has three goals and 13 points in 26 games. He also has a team-leading 92 penalty minutes.
