Baptista, Bartus spark K's to victory
Justin A. Cohn | The Journal Gazette
Mason Baptista kept up his torrid scoring pace, netting a goal in a fourth straight game, and goaltender Garrett Bartus got his second shutout of the season, as the Komets defeated the league-worst Elmira Jackals 1-0 in front of 1,707 fans at First Arena in Elmira, New York, tonight.
Baptista, who has four goals and six points during his streak, netted the winning goal 16:32 into the third period on goalie Andy Iles, who stopped 30 of 31 shots.
Bartus stopped all 28 shots he faced, improving his record to 11-4-1 with a 2.45 goals-against average and a .911 save percentage. Captain Jamie Schaafsma and defenseman Jason Binkley assisted on the goal.
The Komets (23-13-4) are now 1-2-0 on their five-game road trip that continues at Elmira on Friday and at Reading, Pennsylvania, on Saturday.
These are the only two meetings of the season between the Komets and Jackals (9-25-5), who have lost 14 of their last 17 games. The Komets didn’t face the Jackals at all last season.
While third periods had dogged the Komets lately, they finished strong by totaling 13 of the final 17 shots and not taking a penalty in the final period. Elmira was scoreless on three power plays and Fort Wayne was 0 for 1.
Notes: Shawn Szydlowski will be the Komets’ representative on the ECHL Fantasy Team and Pat Nagle will be their Golden Goalie. The players were picked via a fan online vote and they will wear special jerseys sometime between Jan. 27 and Feb. 27 that will be auctioned off beginning March 2 through The MeiGray Group. ... The Komets played without forward Mike Embach.
