IOWA CITY, Iowa — Bob Elliott, who spent the last five years as an assistant coach at Notre Dame, died Saturday night at 64 after a lengthy battle with cancer.
Elliott spent 38 years as an assistant for a number of high-profile schools. He spent 11 years as an assistant under Hayden Fry with the Iowa Hawkeyes, for which he had been a defensive back, and he also worked for Kansas State, Iowa State, San Diego State and Notre Dame.
With the Irish, he coached safeties and linebackers and was a special assistant to Brian Kelly in 2015 and 2016.
He was coaching Nebraska safeties until a turn in his health early this year forced him into an off-the-field coaching role.
