Notre Dame up to No. 5 in AP poll

CHRIS GOFF | The Journal Gazette

SOUTH BEND — Where will Notre Dame be on Tuesday night when the selection committee for the College Football Playoff releases its first Top 25? Right now, polls indicate coach Brian Kelly's team is in the thick of the playoff chase.

Notre Dame (7-1) moved up to No. 5 in the latest Associated Press poll, trailing three unbeaten teams -- No. 1 Alabama, No. 2 Georgia and No. 4 Wisconsin -- and a fellow one-loss outfit in No. 3 Ohio State.

There was a bit of bad news Sunday as Kelly announced tight end Alize Mack has been diagnosed with a concussion. He did not have a catch before leaving Saturday's 35-14 win over No. 20 North Carolina State.

Mack was placed in Notre Dame's concussion protocol and must pass the various stages in order to play in next Saturday's home game against Wake Forest.
