Irish pick up another high profile recruit

DYLAN SINN | The Journal Gazette

Notre Dame picked up its third commitment in as many days from a four-star recruit in the 2019 class Sunday when defensive end Howard Cross III announced on Twitter he intends to play for the Irish.

Cross, son of former New York Giants tight end Howard Cross Jr., joins offensive lineman John Olmstead and safety Litchfield Ajavon as high profile recruits who committed to Notre Dame this week.

"I am extremely happy and excited to announce that I have committed to the University of Notre Dame," wrote Cross III, who chose the Irish over Boston College, Virginia Tech and others, on Twitter. "Thank you Coach (Brian) Kelly and the staff of Notre Dame."

Cross is one of the best defensive ends in the class, with ranking him No. 19 at that position and in the top 250 in his class. The Montvale, N.J. native becomes the second New Jersey recruit in three days to choose the Irish after Olmstead picked them Friday.

Notre Dame now has six commitments in the 2019 class, three of them on the defensive line. Cross joins Jacob Lacey and Hunter Spears as four-star pass-rushers who have committed to the Irish already. Notre Dame also secured a verbal commitment from 2020 quarterback Drew Pyne this week.
