Authors explore integrating leadership, strategy

LISA GREEN | The Journal Gazette

Leaders need strategy and strategy is successful only with leadership.

Seems simple enough. But the interdependency of the two are among topics explored in a book released Oct. 11 by Harbir Singh and Michael Useem. It's titled, "The Strategic Leader's Roadmap; 6 Steps for Integrating Leadership and Strategy."

"Even a strong leader can flounder without an effective strategy, and the most powerful strategy can fail without the right leader," the authors said in a news release about their book. "Only those who master and integrate both skills can effectively navigate the challenges that lay ahead for today’s organizations."

Singh is a management professor and vice dean for global initiatives at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Useem is the author of The Leader's Checklist, which I've mentioned before, and co-author of "Boards That Lead." He is also a professor and is director of the Center for Leadership and Change Management at Wharton.

The book is based on research and interviews with prominent executives including Carlos Ghosn, chief operating officer of Nissan; Indra Nooyi, chief executive of PepsiCo; and Jack Ma, founder and chief executive of Alibaba Group.
