Last-second shot dooms Mad Ants
JUSTIN A. COHN | The Journal Gazette
The Mad Ants’ troubles at the G League Showcase continue.
P.J. Dozier’s steal of a Walt Lemon Jr. pass and then a layup with 0.2 on the clock gave the Oklahoma City Blue a 110-108 victory over the Mad Ants this afternoon at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga, Ontario, where scouts from all 30 NBA teams were in attendance for the annual Showcase.
The Mad Ants (14-11) had trailed most of the game, falling behind by as many as 17 points, but they rallied to take an 88-84 lead with 8:29 remaining, when rookie Ben Moore pulled up for a successful jump shot.
Another Moore basket – a layup with 3:38 left – gave Fort Wayne a 101-98 lead.
But the Midwest Division-leading Blue (15-11) kept working it inside for the victory, extending Fort Wayne’s losing streak at the Showcase to five games.
The Mad Ants haven’t won a Showcase game since 2015.
Markel Brown had 22 points for the Blue. Myke Henry added 21. Daniel Hamilton had 19 points, 13 rebounds and 13 assists.
For Fort Wayne, which saw its first three-game winning streak since November come to a halt, Moore, Lemon, C.J. Fair, DeQuan Jones and Jarrod Uthoff had 14 points apiece. Uthoff had 12 rebounds and Moore added 10.
Stephan Hicks had 13 points.
Fort Wayne faces league-worst Salt Lake City at 1 p.m. Saturday in Mississauga.
