Blackmon trade sets up intrigue with Mad Ants

JUSTIN A. COHN | The Journal Gazette

The trade of James Blackmon Jr., the former Bishop Luers and Indiana University basketball star, was made official as he was sent from the G League’s Delaware 87ers to the Wisconsin Herd today.

The Herd is 1½ games behind the Mad Ants, who play Saturday at Memphis, for first place in the Central Division and they meet 11 a.m. Thursday at Memorial Coliseum. That will be Blackmon’s second game of the season at the Coliseum; he had 20 points in a loss to the Mad Ants on Nov. 18.

Wisconsin also acquired the rights to Russ Smith, a former Mad Ants player, for Cameron Oliver and Shannon Brown.

Blackmon, a rookie, played 28 games with the 87ers and averaged 12.8 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.4 assists. Smith, who is averaging 34.7 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists with Fujian in China, holds the G League single-game scoring record with 65 points for Delaware in 2016 against Canton.
