Rio Grande Valley 119, Mad Ants 116

Mad Ants lose second straight

The Mad Ants have lost back-to-back games for the first time in 2018, thanks to a 119-116 loss to the Rio Grande Valley Vipers on Tuesday night at State Farm Arena in Hidalgo, Texas.

Down 118-115 in the waning seconds, the Mad Ants (25-17) forced a turnover and had chances to tie it but Jamil Wilson and Tra-Deon Hollins missed 3-point attempts. DeQuan Jones, who had a Mad Ants-best 37 points and 11 rebounds, made a technical free throw with 0.7 seconds left before the Vipers (25-18) successfully inbounded the ball and were fouled.

The Mad Ants were hindered by 24 turnovers, eight more than their opponents.

Wilson and Stephan Hicks had 18 points apiece. Jarrod Uthoff had 14 points and nine rebounds.

R.J. Hunter had 27 points for the Vipers.

The Mad Ants opened the game on a 35-20 run — culminating with a Uthoff 3-pointer and a Hollins layup — but their lead was down to three, at 55-52, by halftime.

After Fort Wayne’s Wilson tied it at 85 with a 3-pointer with 2:15 remaining in the third quarter, the Vipers went on a 16-5 run. A Hicks layup cut the Mad Ants’ deficit to six at 105-99.

In his second game back from the NBA’s Indiana Pacers, Trey McKinney Jones had six points for the Mad Ants. Among other Pacers prospects, Ike Anigbogu had 10 points, seven rebounds and five of the team’s nine shot blocks, Ben Moore had seven points, and Edmond Sumner remained away on bereavement leave.

The Mad Ants face the Texas Legends at 8 p.m. Wednesday.
