Saint Francis survives in NAIA opener
GREG JONES | The Journal Gazette
No. 1 Saint Francis survived a scare in the first round of the NAIA playoffs, holding off No. 15 Benedictine 26-21 on Saturday at Bishop D'Arcy Stadium in a game that was delayed for six hours because of lightning and heavy rain around the time of the scheduled noon kickoff.
The defending national champion Cougars (11-0) surged in the second half against the Ravens (9-3) after trailing at halftime, 14-6.
Junior Justin Green scored two touchdowns, including returning the second-half kickoff 86 yards for a touchdown that gave the Cougars a needed spark.
Saint Francis will again be at home next Saturday in the quarterfinals, against No. 10 Northwestern (Iowa).
