IU to face Akron in soccer festival
The Indiana men’s soccer team, which was the runner-up for the NCAA championship last season, will face Akron at Bishop D’Arcy Stadium on Aug. 17, as part of the annual National Soccer Festival.
Akron reached the semifinals of the College Cup last season.
The game, which has been announced by both IU and Akron, was confirmed Monday night to The Journal Gazette by Terry Stefankiewicz, the Soccer Festival’s executive director.
A full schedule of Festival games and information on how to get tickets will come at a later date, though presale tickets will be available at Connolly’s Do It Best and Soccer Plus.
For the Hoosiers, it will be their third exhibition game of the season, following an Aug. 12 match against Xavier in Bloomington and an Aug. 15 game against Louisville in Westfield. Akron will have played Denver and Cleveland State on Aug. 11 and 13, respectively, in Akron, Ohio.
IU, a regular participant in the Soccer Festival, lost 1-0 to Stanford in double overtime in the championship game of the College Cup. The Cardinal won its third consecutive national title and IU, which was undefeated during the regular season and had 18 shutouts in 25 games, missed out on a ninth national championship.
The Hoosiers’ roster includes two defender/midfielders from northeast Indiana – Rece Buckmaster, a senior from Auburn who played at Canterbury, and Spencer Glass, a redshirt sophomore from Carroll.
The Zips lost 2-0 to Stanford in the NCAA semifinals.
IU played at D’Arcy Stadium on April 22 in the spring portion of the Soccer Festival, losing 3-0 to Notre Dame.
