U.S. Rep. Todd Rokita has scheduled a "special announcement" for Wednesday morning at the Statehouse – presumably to make formal his candidacy for a U.S. Senate seat.
His campaign said in an email Tuesday that Rokita, R-4th, will make an announcement on the steps of the Statehouse at 9 a.m. Wednesday.
Rokita, 47, for several months has been signaling his intention to run for the seat held since 2013 by Sen. Joe Donnelly, D-Ind. The Brownsburg resident set up a statewide campaign finance team in May, has touted his campaign fundraising numbers and has been publicly squabbling with announced candidate Rep. Luke Messer, R-6th.
Rokita would become the sixth announced Senate candidate for the 2018 Republican primary election, joining Messer, state Rep. Mike Braun of Jasper, Hamilton County businessman Terry Hamilton, Kokomo attorney Mark Hurt and New Albany college administrator Andrew Takami.
