Kokomo attorney announces Senate candidacy

Brian Francisco | Washington editor

Republican Mark Hurt, a Kokomo attorney, has announced his candidacy for the U.S. Senate seat held by Sen. Joe Donnelly, D-Ind.

Hurt announced his candidacy Monday on his Facebook page. He planned to make campaign appearances Wednesday in Indianapolis and Thursday in Fort Wayne.

He is scheduled to appear at Fort Wayne's Famous Coney Island at 2:45 p.m. Thursday.

Hurt, who worked on the staff of then-Sen. Dan Coats, R-Ind., in the 1990s, is the first announced Republican candidate for Donnelly's Senate seat, which is up for election in 2018. Republican U.S. Reps. Luke Messer and Todd Rokita reportedly are considering running.
