DeKalb stuns No. 5 Carroll in baseball sectional


Jackson Pyck-Hontz had a strong game on the mound to lead the DeKalb baseball team to a 2-1 victory Friday over fifth-ranked Carroll in a Class 4A sectional semifinal game in Waterloo.

Pyck-Hontz gave up only two hits over seven innings, striking out six and walking four.

Alec Brunson had a home run for the Barons.

Tied at 1, the Barons scored a run in the bottom of the second inning and held on for the victory. DeKalb totaled only three hits, as Brunson, Troy Hickman and Jay Krebs were each 1 for 3.

Parker Hale had both of Carroll’s hits and was 2 for 3.

Riley Perlich pitched 5 1/3 innings for the Chargers, giving up three hits and two runs, striking out eight and walking four, and Jake Ostrowski pitched the other two-thirds of an inning.

WAYNE 8, NORTH SIDE 7: At Huntington, in a Class 4A sectional, Leontae Warren was 1 for 4 with three RBI and got the victory on the mound for the Generals, pitching four innings and giving up two runs with two strikeouts. Kamden Boice had the save.

ADAMS CENTRAL 4, CANTERBURY 0: At Canterbury, Luke Bittner threw 79 pitches and Andrew Hammond had 32 for the Flying Jets, who limited the Cavaliers to two hits in Class 2A

BLACKHAWK CHRISTIAN 8, LAKEWOOD PARK CHRISTIAN 1: At Blackawk Christian, Kole Barkhouse was 2 for 3 with an RBI in a Class A game. Kyle Zurbuch was 2 for 4 with two RBI and one run. Lakewood Park’s Drew Lyons was 2 for 3 but his team trailed 4-0 after two innings.


BELLMONT 7, MARION 0: At Ossian, Macy Montgomery threw a perfect game with 16 strikeouts in the Norwell Sectional. The Braves will play Columbia City at 10 a.m. today for the title.

COLUMBIA CITY 7, HERITAGE 2: At Ossian, Ciarra Ivy had a home run for the Eagles in a Class 3A sectional, where they scored four runs in the top of the seventh to finish the scoring. Brooke Ebersole was the winning pitcher, as Columbia City out-hit the Patriots 12-7.
