South Adams softball headed back to semistate
The third-ranked South Adams softball team is returning to the Class 2A semistate after beating No. 5 Bremen 5-3 in a regional game Tuesday in Berne.
The Starfires will face No. 10 Whitko, which beat Winamac 5-4 in another regional, at 1 p.m. Saturday at the LaVille Semistate.
South Adams (20-2) lost 9-0 to Madison-Grant in the semistate championship game a year ago. The Wildcats (23-5) are playing in their first-ever semistate.
Against Bremen on Tuesday, Katelin Augsburger struck out 12 batters to lead the Starfires.
WAWASEE 5, CONCORDIA 0: Megan Fretz gave up just one hit as the visiting Warriors earned a trip to the semistate by beating the SAC champion Cadets.
Wawasee (25-3) will play South Bend St. Joseph at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Twin Lakes Semistate.
The Warriors' Ale Brito scored two runs against Concordia (19-8).
BELLMONT 6, TIPTON 2: Audrey Blackmore knocked in four runs as the visiting Braves beat the Blue Devils in a regional game.
No. 9 Bellmont (20-1) will play top-ranked Kankakee Valley at 11 a.m. Saturday at Twin Lakes.
HOMESTEAD 295, BISHOP DWENGER 309, CANTERBURY 311, BLACKHAWK CHRISTIAN 383: The Spartans won a tune-up to Friday's sectional against three other postseason competitors at Chestnut Hills.
Garrett Willis led Homestead with a 70, finishing as the medalist. Canterbury's Michael Brothers was second with a 71.
HAWK INVITE: Carroll won the team title at the first Hawk Invite with a 311 at Noble Hawk.
Leo was second with a 328, while Triton was third with a 353, Garrett fourth with a 383 and Lawrence Central fifth with a 448.
The Chargers' Xavier Walden had a 73 for medalist honors, while teammate Cam Boyce was second with a 75.
