AUBREE REICHEL | The Journal Gazette
Where: Bud and Jackie Sellick Bowl, Butler University
When: 6 p.m. today
Records: Covenant Christian (16-4-1), Canterbury (12-6-3)
Outlook: The Cavaliers defeated Boone Grove 3-0 in the semistate at South Bend St. Joseph last weekend. The teams were scoreless at half but freshman Jonathan Bowen opened scoring in the 47th minute when a long shot deflected off a defender. Justin Baeten scored two minutes later and Michael Clark added another in the 70th minute.
It's the program's first semistate title since 2012, a title won en route to its most recent state championship.
Covenant Christian and Canterbury met in the 1A championship game in 2012, a 5-0 victory for the Cavaliers. It was the program's fifth state title, all under coach Greg Mauch. A sixth title today would break the state record for most state titles by a program and by a single coach, both currently tied with North Central and coach Jerry Little.
Canterbury is led by Ben Kunce (15 goals, nine assists) and Baeten (12 goals, seven assists) and goalkeeper Clayton Perry has 53 saves in 15 matches with 11 goals against and seven shutouts.
Covenant Christian upended No. 6 Providence 2-0 in the semistate. A state title would give the school its first state title in any sport.
The Warriors are led by senior Austin Wagner, who ranks third in the state with 24 assists, while junior Maclain Hastings leads the team with 18 goals and junior Jacob Susud has a 1.29 goals against average with 27 goals allowed in 20 matches.
