Buck leads Spartans past Saints

Sam Buck scored 22 points – 19 in the second half – to lead the Homestead boys basketball team to a 53-34 victory at Bishop Dwenger on Friday night.

The Spartans were already in control at halftime with a 21-9 lead and never let the Saints back into it.

Buck had eight points in the third quarter, after which the Spartans still led 36-25. In the fourth, Buck made three shots from beyond the arc and a couple of free throws to help the Spartans cement the victory to improve their record to 2-2.

Bishop Dwenger (1-1) was paced by Hayden Smithey’s 13 points and Lucas Lehrman’s eight.

Onye Ezeakudo added 16 points, all of it coming in the first half, for Homestead.


WAYNE 73, SNIDER 60: At Wayne, Craig Young had 19 points and Kylon Jarreau added 17 for the Generals, who closed the game on a 28-15 run.

Shaquan Sanders added 11 points for Wayne.

CARROLL 73, CONCORDIA 35: At Carroll, David Ejah made 8 of 9 shots, including 3 of 4 from 3-point range, to finish with 20 points and lead the Chargers.

Reece Swoverland added 12 points.

Girls basketball

LEO 67, DEKALB 50: At Waterloo, Sophia Pierce had 18 points for the Lions, who finished the game with 18 of the fourth quarter’s 29 points.

Teammate Brooke Smith had 14 points.

SOUTH SIDE 70, NORTH SIDE 40: At South Side, Lamyia Woodson’s 14 points paced the Archers, who opened the game on a 32-6 run.

CENTRAL NOBLE 49, WESTVIEW 42: At Albion, Sydney Freeman had 18 points to lead the Cougars.

BLUFFTON 52, WOODLAN 33: At Woodburn, Allison Powers’ 10 points paced Bluffton, which outscored the Warriors 18-8 in the fourth quarter.
