Warsaw wins boys swim sectional title
Warsaw won five events to claim its own boys swimming sectional championship Saturday, its 11th straight team title. The Tigers scored 421 points, 105 better than runner-up Columbia City.
Individual champions for Warsaw included Grant Knight in the 200-meter individual medley and Ian Deming in the 100 butterfly, while Knight and Nicolas Bazzoni went 1-2 in the 100 breaststroke. The Tigers also claimed titles in the 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay.
Matt Webber (200 freestyle) and Aaron Fix (100 backstroke) were individual titlists for the Eagles, who also won the 400 free relay.
CONCORD SECTIONAL: In Elkhart, Wawasee (311 points) led area schools with a fourth-place finish. Concord edged Northridge, 395-388, for the team championship, while DeKalb (116) was seventh, East Noble (106) eighth, Angola (94) 10th and West Noble (five) was 11th.
Jared Krugman (500 free) was the Warriors’ lone champion. Jack Skidmore took third in the 100 fly for the Barons, Griffen Dafforn-Koebler was fifth in the 100 fly for the Knights and the Hornets’ 200 free relay team of Zacchaeus Creager, Jarrett Gibson, Zane Butler and Kyler Bourne placed sixth.
JAY COUNTY SECTIONAL: In Portland, Bluffton’s 299 points was good for second to champion Delta’s 375.5. Adams Central, Norwell, Bellmont and South Adams placed fourth through seventh, respectively, in the team race.
Tiger senior Walker Leas won the 200 individual medley and the 100 backstroke, while Bluffton also claimed the 200 medley relay. Starfire senior Zach Colpaert swept the 50 and 100 free, and Brave junior Caleb McCarty (200 free) and Knight junior Tucker Edington (100 breast) also won events. The Flying Jets placed second in the 200 and 400 free relays.
EAST NOBLE 64, WAWASEE 51: In Kendallville, Hayden Jones scored 20 points and Michael Bender added 15 as the Knights (19-1) won their 10th straight. Aaron Evans led the Warriors (5-16) with 16 points, while Jarius Boyer and Ryan Edington added 11 and 10, respectively.
LAWRENCE NORTH 69, SOUTH SIDE 65: In South Side, Asher Blum’s 21 points weren’t enough for the Archers (12-9), as three Wildcats scored at least 14. Trejean Didier added 19 for South Side.
CARROLL 62, NORTH CENTRAL 54: In Indianapolis, Riley Perlich and Dan McKeeman each scored 17 for the Chargers (17-3). Donald Lee had a game-high 20 points for the Panthers (6-14).
CANTERBURY 61, BISHOP LUERS 56: In Canterbury, Cam Kreiger’s double-double (19 points, 12 rebounds) lifted the Cavaliers (9-11) to a season sweep of the Knights (1-19).
HOMESTEAD 55, JAY COUNTY 46, OT: In Portland, the Spartans (13-7) bounced back from a Friday loss to Carroll to knock off the host Patriots (14-7) in overtime.
CATHEDRAL 74, SNIDER 70: In Snider, 27 points from Dillon Duff wasn’t enough for the Panthers (6-14), who lost their third straight. Armaan Franklin poured in 38 points for the Irish (18-4).
COLUMBIA CITY 52, NORTHRIDGE 47: In Middlebury, the Eagles (10-13) picked up a road victory against the Northern Lakes Conference co-champion Raiders (11-9).
NORWELL 67, WOODLAN 62: In Woodburn, the Knights (13-9) rallied from down four points after three quarters to claim their third straight victory, while the Warriors (9-11) fell to 1-3 in their last four.
ANGOLA 54, WEST NOBLE 42: In Ligonier, the Hornets (13-7, 8-2 Northeast Corner Conference) kept pace a game back of league-leading Westview with one conference tilt left. The Chargers fell to .500 on the season (10-10, 4-6).
CENTRAL NOBLE 63, LAKELAND 52: In LaGrange, 16 points from Ridley Zolman lifted the Cougars (10-9, 7-3 Northeast Corner Conference) to a matinee victory.
CHURUBUSCO 66, WHITKO 60: In South Whitley, Zane Burke scored 19 points and Brayton Bonar added a double-double (18 points, 10 rebounds) as the Eagles (9-11) won for the fourth time in their last five outings. The Wildcats (9-14) alternated wins and losses for the 11th straight game.
BLACKHAWK CHRISTIAN 98, HAMILTON 32: In Blackhawk, the Braves (19-2) set a school record for most regular season victories. The Marines (2-19) lost for the third straight outing.
CARMEL 53, WARSAW 44: In Warsaw, the Tigers (11-10) struggled to contain Butler commit John Michael Mulloy, who finished with 23 points and 14 rebounds for the Greyhounds (14-7).
KENTUCKY INVITE: In Lexington, Ky., Carroll senior Justin Becker placed fourth in the 60-meter dash at the 25th annual UK High School Invitational, held Saturday at the Nutter Fieldhouse on the campus of Kentucky.
Becker entered the finals seeded third after a preliminary time of 6.90 seconds. The senior improved his time to 6.86 in the finals, just .07 behind champion Eric Allen of Maryland.
