Homestead boys top Canterbury in soccer


Marco Navarro and Rocco Zirille each had a hat trick as Homestead beat Canterbury, the defending Class A state champion, 7-0, in boys soccer Tuesday.

Navarro scored the first two goals for the Spartans (2-1), who led 4-0 at halftime. Jake Hege also scored a goal in the first half and recorded an assist. Zirille scored three straight goals as the Cavaliers fell to 1-2-1.


Girls soccer

WAYNE 3, BISHOP LUERS 1: Gladys Donis, Kara Gerber and April Salazar each scored as the Generals improved to 4-1. Salazar also had an assist and Amber Minnick made six saves. Ashlynn Gray scored the lone goal for the Knights (1-2) in the first half. 

Girls golf

WAYNE 196, NORTHROP 214: Three Generals carded sub-50 rounds at Colonial Oaks, led by Jayda Statler, who carded a 43. Molly Brehm was second at 45, recording a birdie on the seventh hole. Casey Chapman was third with a score of 47. Treva Datcher was Northrop's leader with a 47. 


CANTERBURY 3, NEW HAVEN 1: The Cavaliers (3-2) lost the second game but recovered to win 25-19, 18-25, 25-20, 25-17 over the Bulldogs (0-4). Darryn Hargrett recorded five aces, seven kills and 13 digs for visiting Canterbury, and Olivia Caffray and Marissa Rivers each had three aces. Rivers also made seven kills, and Nicole Hanning-Bean had six. Brynn Kauffman had 24 assists. Ava Doster led the Bulldogs with four aces and 25 digs, while Emily Cordray had 16 kills. 

Boys tennis

WAWASEE 3, WHITKO 2: Zach Leedy and Graham Perek won at No. 1 and 2 singles for the Warriors, but Whitko's Devon Akers beat Wawasee's Colin Rhoades, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 at No. 3 singles. The teams split in the doubles matches, with Wawasee's Jacob Krugman and Grant Brooks getting the win at No. 1 doubles and Whitko's Jonathan Stroyer and Jackson Hollenbaugh edging out a win at No. 2 doubles.
