No. 4 North Side tops DeKalb


Davontae Kinnie and Brandan Johnson had 15 points apiece Tuesday to lead the No. 4 North Side boys basketball team to a 56-49 victory over DeKalb in a Class 4A sectional game.

Kinnie made 5 of 8 shots and Johnson was 5 for 9 with four rebounds, as the Legends held off a late run by the Barons, who scored 15 of the final 26 points at Carroll.

North Side, which was coming off a 74-73 loss to South Bend Riley, opened the game with a 16-11 run and led 30-21 at halftime. North Side (22-2), which got 10 points from Keion Brooks, has won 16 of its last 17 games.

DeKalb (8-15), which lost its last three games, was paced by Logan Kruse’s 16 points, including 4-of-6 shooting from 3-point range, and four rebounds. Isaac Brown added 15 points, including 4-of-9 shooting from beyond the arc.

The teams had met Dec. 2, in the Legends’ third game of the season, and North Side won then, 67-42.


HOMESTEAD 84, SOUTH SIDE 67: At Wayne, Jack Ferguson scored 32 points, including 17 in the second half as the Spartans went on a 45-39 run. Teammate Brandon Durnell totaled 26 points. South Side was paced by Mikale Stevenson’s 30 points, 23 of which came after halftime, while Cortney Shorter totaled 15 points.


WAWASEE 41, TIPPECANOE VALLEY 37: At Syracuse, Trevon Coleman’s 14 points paced the Warriors to the overtime victory. Tyler Smith had seven points, including a 3-pointer in overtime for Wawasee. Tippecanoe Valley, which closed regulation time with a 14-11 run, had only four players score points – led by DeSean Heckman’s 14 points and Alec Craig’s 12.

MISSISSINEWA 26, HERITAGE 24: At Decatur, Jerod May led Mississinewa with eight points, as it withstood a 9-4 fourth-quarter run by the Patriots. Abe Beard led Heritage with seven points, as it couldn’t make it all the way back from a 15-9 halftime deficit.

COLUMBIA CITY 56, BELLMONT 29: At Decatur, Mitchell Wilson totaled 21 points and Parker Hazen added 16 to lead the Eagles, who led 33-21 at halftime and then bolstered it with a 15-3 third-quarter run.


CHURUBUSCO 72, SOUTH ADAMS 51: At Woodburn, Jalen Paul totaled 26 points, 12 assists and four steals for the victorious Eagles. Meanwhile, teammate Dakota Barkley had 25 points, seven rebounds and three assists.
