Madonna to direct ballet dancer's tale

staff, news services

Madonna is pirouetting back into the director's chair.

MGM Motion Picture Group President Jonathan Glickman says Tuesday that the pop music icon will direct a film based on ballet dancer Michaela DePrince's memoir “Taking Flight: From War Orphan to Star Ballerina.”

DePrince overcame a childhood in war-stricken Sierra Leone to become a world-class ballerina. She made her debut at age 17 in South Africa's Joburg Ballet and also appeared in Beyonce's “Lemonade.”

Madonna directed the 2008 comedy “Filth and Wisdom” and the Wallis Simpson drama “W.E.” She is also working on a film adaptation of the novel “The Impossible Lives of Greta Wells.”

No cast or release date is set for “Taking Flight,” but “Fresh Off the Boat” writer Camilla Blackett will pen the screenplay.

'Voice' has another area contestant

Another northern Indiana native has secured a spot on “The Voice.”

Jordan Kirkdorffer, 28, joined Blake Shelton's team on Monday night's pre-taped episode. The Franklin, Tennessee, resident is a native of New Paris, just south of Goshen. He sang Brett Young's “In Case You Didn't Know.”

Fort Wayne native Christiana Danielle Hicks is also appearing on this season of the NBC singing competition. Last season, local singer Addison Agen placed second. It airs Monday and Tuesday nights.

Protests end tour

French rock musician Bertrand Cantat, who was convicted of killing his actress girlfriend 15 years ago, has pulled out of all the festivals he was scheduled to appear in this summer amid a growing wave of protests.

The 54-year-old leader of the band Noir Desir released a solo album and recently started touring. After several dates were canceled by organizers following complaints from women's groups and individuals, Cantat decided “to put an end to all polemics.”

He was sentenced to eight years and served four for beating to death Marie Trintignant.
