Commissioners OK $171,000 for Drug Free Communities Fund
DAVE GONG | The Journal Gazette
The Allen County Commissioners on Friday approved nearly $171,000 for the Drug Free Communities Fund managed by the Allen County Drug and Alcohol Consortium.
Per state statute, the money is divided equally among the organization's administrative support staff, law enforcement, prevention and treatment or intervention programs, said Jerri Lerch, the Drug and Alcohol Consortium's executive director.
Money for the fund is generated in part by fines levied by prosecutors and judges against drunken driving and drug offenders. However, the number of Operating While Intoxicated charges are decreasing, resulting in smaller amounts of money for the fund.
"We have seen steady declines in this fund locally," Lerch said. "We are probably about 15 percent below last year, but after the last six or seven years that fund has declined nearly in half."
